Increasing Racial Education in White Educators with Jay Wamsted
Show Notes

This week we chat with 15-year educator, Jay Wamsted. Jay shares how his initiation into teaching within a predominantly Black school and community started his journey into developing self, facing his own biases, and becoming a more engaging teacher by being open to discussing race and culture in the classroom.

Jay schools us to share:

  • How issues of race matter in all school subjects
  • That math isn’t a ‘universal language’ when it isn’t taught in your native language
  • How his experience uncovered his own bias and assumptions of the learning experience for students in ELL (English Language Learners)
  • How unlearning and disassembling stereotypes remind teachers that each students deserves personal attention
  • What assignments he would share with white teachers to create a more inclusive and equitable classroom and investigating their own history
  • What it looks like to talk about race at home
